Who is Mrs. Burns?

The University of Central Florida, the home of the Knights, is where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Disorders; and then I went on to earn my Master’s Degree in English Language Arts Education. I obtained my Professional Teaching Certificate and started teaching in 2004 at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando, FL. While at CCHS, I taught English I, II, III, both regular and honors as well as Journalism I. My Journalism class was responsible for creating our online newspaper. For four years I was the Speech and Debate coach, and three out of the four years I took students to National Debate Competitions in New York, Texas, and Nebraska.

In 2010, I moved to California and was hired at NOVA, which then became North Valley Military Institute where I taught English 9, 10, 11 and a Junior/Senior Writing Seminar class. I worked for NVMI for seven years. I joined the Alliance family at Judy Ivie Burton Technology High School in 2017 where I taught English 9/10 Support and Creative Writing. This school year I wlll be teaching English 9.

I will do whatever I can to ensure that my students are successful in their academic careers and go on to college. Education is important to me; I believe that everyone should strive to be life long learners. Love of reading is one of the most valuable gifts I can give to my students. I am an avid, voracious reader. I would even say that I am addicted to the printed word. So feel free to talk to me about books, but please, please, please don’t ruin the ending. Since reading is such an important skill, the English department will be utilizing a Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) Program to ensure that our students are reading high interest books.

One last thing I would like to tell you about myself is that I am an identical twin. See if you can tell which one is me in the picture!

Book Review handout

Ongoing Extra Credit:

Once you finish reading a book during S.S.R., complete the Book Review form online and email it to me or get a hardcopy and turn it in for extra credit. These Book Review handouts will be in a binder that all students will have access to, so it can help them find books to read. I will except them all year!!

Read, Read, Read

This is a reminder that all students should have a book to read at home (either from my classroom library or from your local library) whenever homework is not assigned!
