Description
  • The Creative Writing course is designed for students who enjoy writing as a form of art and personal expression. In this course, you will explore the elements of numerous literary genres (short fiction, poetry, drama, film) and the power of both print and multimedia formats. By engaging in writing workshops, the study of literary elements and techniques, writing/author studies, and peer reviews/conferences, you will develop original writing pieces. Specifically, you will:
  • Complete prewriting activities to encourage creative thinking and to inspire writing projects.
  • Analyze and critique writers’ use of literary elements, word choice, style, and content.
  • Develop your ability to create characters, conflicts, settings, plots, themes, and points of view.
  • Craft language to convey your ideas and refine your own writing style.
  • Write original writing pieces inspired by literary models and examples.
  • Make connections among literature, your own lives, and real world issues.

Due:

Assignment

  • You will write your own poem that is the “other side” of a love relationship using a love song.
  • For example, if you use a love song, you’ll show the speaker is no longer in love. If you use a love song about lost love, you will show the speaker is still in love.
  • The poem should be about the same length as the song you used (I mean the same number of verses - you can include the chorus if you want to).
  • Be sure to include the lyrics for the song you use to write your response to the “other side” of love.
  • The PowerPoint Presentation includes possible songs to use if you are having trouble choosing one.
  • You will have the entire class on Friday to finish this assignment; however, please choose the song you want to use before you come to class on Friday.

Due:

Assignment

1.  Take notes in your notebook on haikus (Slides 1 - 5 only).
2.  Create a haiku that follows the 5-7-5 syllable structure includes sensory language and either is about nature, a moment of beauty, or a poignant (touching, moving, or sad) experience. This also goes in your notebook.
3.  Using song lyrics, create a haiku for that song. Your lines in the haiku will summarize or explain the meaning of the verse, bride, or chorus. See the examples in the PP. You'll use Google Docs to type your haiku. Also include the three sections of the song you used to write your haiku (See "Hello" by Adele). Then include a picture that illustrates your haiku.
