  1. What are the conflicts Romeo has after the deaths in scene 1? Give evidence to explain your answer.
  2. What is the Friar's plan for Romeo?

Act III, Scene 4

  1. Why did Paris come to the Capulet's house? What decision does Capulet make? How does this affect Romeo and Juliet? Why does Shakespeare do this?
  2. How does Capulet’s behavior in this scene contradict what he says in Act I?

  1. Why is there is playful argument over whether it is the nightingale or the lark that they hear chirping in the garden?
  2. Juliet speaks to her mother and refers to Romeo, saying ‘And yet no man like he doth grieve my heart.’ How does her mother understand her words?  What does Juliet actually mean?
  3. How does Juliet react when her mother tells her that Paris will marry her in three days’ time?
  4. Describe Lord Capulet’s treatment of Juliet in this scene. How has he changed from the beginning of the play?

1.  Complete RACE Paragraph using Checklist to explain who you think is to blame for the deaths in Act III, Scene 1. 
  • Write a detailed paragraph that explains using at least 2 pieces of textual evidence to defend your answer.
  • Be sure to use a topic sentence that restates the prompt and includes the TAG (Title, Author, and Genre - play)
  • Also make sure that your textual evidence is cited correctly with quotations marks and the page number is in parentheses. For example, “A plague o’ both your houses! (144).
  • Lastly, be sure to explain your evidence in at least two sentences!!

2.  Then explain if you think the Prince deciding to exile Romeo was the right thing to do or if he should have stuck with his original decree: that he would kill anyone who disturbs the streets of Verona again. Be sure to cite textual evidence in your explanation.

  • What does Romeo compare Juliet too? What do they mean?
  • What’s in a name? – How does this metaphor explain how she feels about her own life? Find evidence to explain.
  • What is Juliet afraid of? How does Romeo feel?
  • Why doesn’t Juliet want Romeo to swear by the moon?
  • What are both of their motivations during this scene and how do you know this?
  • After declaring their love for each other, why do they commit to get married right away? Find evidence to explain.
  • Why does Juliet keep coming back to Romeo

Act II, Scene 3

  • Why is the Friar upset that Romeo never went to bed?
  • Summarize the Friar’s view’s on Romeo’s relationships and advice on love generally.
  • According to Romeo, how is his relationship with Juliet different from his feelings from Rosaline?
  • What is Friar Lawrence’s motivation for agreeing to marry R&J? Use text evidence to explain. 
  • Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

Act II, Scene 4

  • Why are Mercutio and Benvolio concerned that Tybalt has challenged Romeo to a duel?
  • Mercutio then makes a joke and says that Romeo is already dead. How has Romeo ‘died’ according to him?
  • Find all of the puns and sexual innuendos in the scene.  What are they talking about?
  • What is the message that the Nurse must give to Juliet from Romeo?
  • To what theme statement does this scene connect? Why?

Act II, Scene 5

  • Explain Juliet’s relationship with the Nurse. Use evidence. What is the Nurse’s motivation for helping Juliet
  • Juliet makes reference to time throughout her speech and makes a point of saying that the Nurse has been away for ‘three long hours’. Why is Juliet so impatient?
  • In what ways does the Nurse tease Juliet?
  • Is the Nurse happy or sad at the end of the scene? Why?
Act II, Scene 6
  • What is the advice Friar Lawrence gives the pair?
  • Do you think they will take the advice or not? Why? Explain and cite some foreshadowing evidence from Act I or II.
