Writing Sonnets

Grade based on format.

Do NOT use a sonnet generator. If you use one that is cheating and plagiarism and made mojo and you will receive a zero and be banished from the Queendom of Levine.

  • 14 lines
  • 3 quatrains and 1 couplet
  • 10 syllables each line
  • ABAB rhyme scheme
  • Iambic pentameter
  • Extended metaphor
    • First quatrain: An exposition of the main theme and main metaphor.
    • Second quatrain: Theme and metaphor extended or complicated; often, some imaginative example is given.
    • Third quatrain: Peripeteia (a twist or conflict), often introduced by a “but” (very often leading off the ninth line). Contradiction or counter-argument.
    • Couplet: Summarizes and leaves the reader with a new, concluding image.

For example:

My book smart man loves me as no one can.

Like books they fuel my mind he fuels my soul.

The poetry of his love as of a man.

Inscribe your love for me til I grow ol’

How do you read the love you see in one’s heart?

How do you sing the songs of love so true?

The sonnets of your love make me depart

And find the trust in love, in love with you.

Tomorrow’s books to us they write themselves

But writ may not ere be sweet enough

Truly by marriage be inside the delves

And the right man’s outside should be tough.

A poetry book can make you reminiscent of

But a man may be a sonnet of thy true love.

Assignment

First Draft Due Friday!!

After you have written this RACE paragraph with your group.  You are now on your own to write a full multi-paragraph essay using the paragraph you just wrote with your group as a jumping-off place.

  1. Is this scene necessary for the play?  Yes or no, why or why not.

If no, why is it there?

If yes, how does it explain the characters’ struggles or motivations?

  1. Is Queen Mab Dream speech for Mercutio or for Romeo? Which one and why?

  1. How does the Queen Mab Dream speech give a great sense of foreboding to Romeo?  Explain.

Follow this format:

(Write in the observational third person.  Keep your “I” out of it.)

Introduction: Attention-Getter/"Hook"; background information; thesis statement that directly addresses the prompt.  Make sure there you mention the title and author.

Section 1: Analyze the imagery in the speech. What is the significance of the images and what do they imply? (Answer the question with a complete sentence to create your claim for this section of the essay.) Example: From the Queen Mab speech, we can tell that Mercutio is _____________.

Be sure to include at least two short pieces of textual evidence from the speech and reasoning (explanations for why the textual evidence supports your claim).  Conclude this section with a sentence summing up the argument in Section 1.

TRANSITION!!

Section 2: What is the purpose of the Queen Mab speech? (Answer the question with a complete sentence to create your claim.) Example: The reason Mercutio talks about Queen Mab is __________________.

Be sure to include at least two short pieces of textual evidence (quotations from anywhere in Scene 4) and reasoning (explanations for why the textual evidence supports your claim). Conclude this section with a sentence summing up the argument in Section 2.

***Note: Each section may contain multiple paragraphs. This does not have to be a traditional “five-paragraph” essay.

Conclusion: Restatement of thesis & claims; brief summary of the argument; conclusion statement (so the reader knows you have made your point and your essay is complete).  REWRITE THE CONCLUSION (We’ve practiced this!)
