Focus: the Unifications of Italy and Germany
Directions: Create a narrative outline of significant events that led to the national unification of Italy and Germany. Make two separate narratives, one for Italy and another for Germany.
Example: Break-up of the Austrian Empire due to nationalism
1500s - Hapsburgs are the most powerful royal family in Europe, controlling Austria, Hungary, Spain, and the New World as part of the Holy Roman Empire.
1516 - Martin Luther begins the Reformation in the Holy Roman Empire. This leads to an eventual split between Catholics and Protestants.
Late 1600s - The Prussian Hohenzollern family builds a strong army and becomes a powerful monarchy in the German-speaking lands.
Mid 1700s - The Wars of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War significantly weaken the Austrian monarchy.
1800 - Austria is indirectly controlled by Napoleon.
1866 - Prussia defeats Austria in the Austro-Prussian War, giving Prussia control over the Northern German Confederation.
1867 - Hungary is given semi-independence as a member of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Early 1900s - Serbian nationalist movements in the Balkan peninsula eventually lead to World War I. The empire ends.
Note: Events and people are always followed up with impact statement
